In times of economic difficulty, many business owners look for ways to cut costs. Saving money is one thing, but all too often the action taken to save that money can have the completely opposite effect and prove a drastically false economy.

Amongst the most popular courses of action small business owners seem to be taking in order to cope with the effects of the economic downturn is either switching to a cheaper accountant or taking on the task of preparing their own books and figures. However, both these decisions will in the majority of cases only save money in the short term and could have far reaching consequences that end up costing the business dearly in terms of time as well as money.

If you are happy with your accountant and they have been consistently saving you money and providing a good service, but you feel they are simply charging you too much and you have been offered a better deal elsewhere, then you should stand back and ask yourself a few questions before making the move. And these should not be the only questions you ask; you should also have a set for your potential new accountant because there are several things you must get clear before you start working with them.

Firstly you need to make sure that you will receive the same level of service from the cheaper accountant. The old adage, ‘you get what you pay for’ is never truer when it comes to professional services. Will they return your calls promptly? Will they deal with your work with the efficiency you are used to?

Secondly, you need to check their experience and reputation. How long have they been qualified? How long has their practice been trading? Can they provide you with testimonials from satisfied clients?

Thirdly, think about the level of expertise of the firm’s staff. Generally a practice that charges less will pay their staff less; this often indicates that the staff are under or even unqualified, poorly trained, lacking in experience and possibly unsupported by their employer. This of course will not make for a pleasant experience with your new accountancy firm.

Lastly, check for hidden costs. You may have been quoted a figure to prepare accounts and deal with a tax or VAT return, and you may think that is all you will have to pay. But beware, because some firms will charge you every time you telephone them, and some will even make charges for writing to you! Make sure your quote covers everything.

In times of economic crisis it is easy to get carried away with cost cutting exercises, focusing on the savings you think you will make by switching to cheaper alternatives or by doing things yourself. However, it is wise to take some time to seriously consider the consequences of your money saving initiatives, because they could well end up costing you far more than they would have done if you had left them alone!

Revolving around the concept of truth, this film uses the medium of money to illustrate how what we believe impacts not only us but the people around us. In 1917, a secret group financed the Bolshevik Revolution; while this group did not break any laws, were their actions ethically right? Creed of Gold follows three college students as they investigate this shadowy group of individuals. For centuries, this group has manipulated finances around the world and is now using the Federal Reserve to undermine the US economic situation. When, unbeknownst to the others, one man gets greedy and creates a computer program in the Federal Reserve accounting program to siphon money into his own pocket, the race is on. An immigrant from Russia, Adam relates the ideas of the Bolshevik revolution to modern day America. Cody, Adam’s brilliant but humorous side-kick, helps bring the message of the film home by sometimes just stating the obvious. And Kirsten allows us to empathize with the trio as we follow her personal journey from high-society to heartfelt faith. www.CreedOfGold.com

Students try out in college soccer recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world.

As the games got more and more violent, soccer was at times suppressed by English sheriffs who followed royal orders decrying the sport as a useless activity. King Henry IV and Henry VIII passed laws against the sport, and King Edward III passed laws that threatened imprisonment to anyone caught playing soccer.

These laws, however, failed to curtail the popularity of the sport, which earned official sanction in England by 1681. The game had become so popular by 1800s that, in certain annual contests in the northern and middle regions of England, large mobs roamed and raged through towns and villages during play. In 1829, an account of such a match in Derbyshire described people with “broken skins, broken heads, torn coats and lost hats.”

The documentation of the development of soccer in England shows Eton College with the earliest known rules of the game in 1815. This supports the implication that, until then, chaos prevailed during matches, as evidenced by the recorded laws that were meant to stem the violence that resulted during the matches.

Soccer is now a regulated sport with countless fans across the world. Countless capable young athletes are overlooked every year simply because they didn’t submit their athletic resume to the colleges suited for them, or left out vital information that would have otherwise caught the attention of college coaches and representatives of college soccer teams. Moreover, many colleges simply don’t bother to allocate all of their soccer recruiting funds because fitting athletes failed to approach them during college soccer recruiting.

The Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for promising players to participate in college soccer teams. D1Athletes is an online community wherein athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need on college soccer recruiting and college soccer teams. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.

A “Split Annuity” is not a product, actually it is a technique that can be used with either a fixed-premium annuity, or a Variable Annuity. It is designed to allow a certain percentage of the principal and interest to be withdrawn by the contract owner, while the remaining investment grows (and compounds) and with the prospect of eventually equaling the original investment amount.

The concept is simple: The contract owner divides the account into two parts. One part is completely liquidated, and the other part is used strictly for growth. While either a fixed-premium annuity, or a Variable Annuity can be used, obviously only the fixed-premium contract can make the guarantee that the original amount will be completely restored within a pre-determined period of time.

The purpose of the Split Annuity concept is to maximize income and at the same time, keep wealth intact. It also has a tax advantage. The way that this would work can best be explained in the following Consumer Application.

CONSUMER APPLICATION

Bradley has freed up $100,000 because of a market transaction. He wants to have a current income but he also wants to make sure that after a certain period of time, he still has his $100,000. And, he wants to do this and still have a tax break.
Bradley invests approximately $60,000 into a fixed-premium annuity which guarantees a 6% rate of income over the next eight years. He then takes the remaining money (approximately $40,000) that is immediately annuitized for the same period of time – 8 years. The insurance company issuing the annuities furnish the exact amount that can be used to accomplish his purpose.
According to the interest credited by the insurance company, the approximately $60,000 will be work $100,000 (exactly) at the end of the 8 year period. During this 8 years, he will receive approximately $450 per month (again the insurer will calculate the exact amount).
The tax break develops because 82% of the $450 per month is not subject to income taxes because of the exclusion ratio.
His goals have been accomplished.
As an alternative, Bradley could invest the $40,000 into a variable account that could take advantage of the returns of 12% – 13% growth of the stocks (over the past 50 years). If he had invested 8 years ago, with the recent stock market gains, he would have had substantial growth in his sub-accounts. Just at $12%, it would have grown to over $90,000.

Unless an individual annuity is used to fund an IRA, it is nonqualified. While premium deposits to a nonqualified annuity are not tax deductible, interest earnings are tax deferred and enjoy all of the other related advantages.
In addition, nonqualified individual annuities are not subject to the strict contribution limitations of an IRA. As a result, individuals may deposit much more cash into a nonqualified annuity each year than they are permitted to deposit into an IRA. For many people, the flexibility, the potential for depositing greater sums for retirement savings and the relatively fewer Internal Revenue Code requirements and limitations on nonqualified annuities, add up to a better choice than an IRA.

Today credit cards are everywhere you look and even college students are great candidates for owning their own college credit cards. Many students are now living on their own or in dorms and need to learn to maintain their own expenses making college credit cards a necessity for many students.

College credit cards are basically just like regular credit cards. However, since college students do not have any type of credit history, they are usually unable to apply for and receive a regular credit card.

However, the question remains, why would a credit card company be willing to give college students credit cards if they have no way of paying back the money they charge on their college credit card?

Well, there are two very good reasons. Most credit card companies that offer college credit cards see a large opportunity in college student population. In fact, the majority of college students stay loyal to their credit card company even after they graduate from college.

It has also been reported that many college students will, in fact, pay on time and give the companies workable income. With the proper use of credit cards, college students can ensure they have good credit when the time comes for them to purchase a new car or new home.

College credit cards are usually preferred by most parents. They know their children may have the chance to overspend but they also know that with their own college credit card they will be building a stable financial future and receive other benefits that regular credit cards do not offer.

College students can use their cards to pay tuition fees. Some college credit cards even offer many unique benefits such as rewards if they pay their balances in a timely manner.

Most college credit cards also offer students lower interest rates as long as the college student maintains good grades. The use of credit can teach the importance of how to create and live on a budget and is great for parents that cannot afford to finance or manage all of their college student’s spending.

College student credit cards can also be set up by parents as pre-paid accounts; this way if the college student needs a little extra money, parents can always add to the credit card but ensure they use the credit card wisely and do not overspend.

The ultimate goal with college credit cards should be for students to learn how to use credit cards responsibly and to learn what they charge on their card is their responsibility.
